CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY.

If you are a person with technical, sales, customer service or management skills, you might want to consider working at a car dealership because of the wide range of career opportunities offered. Independent dealers sell new or pre-owned vehicles from a variety of different carmakers, whereas franchised dealerships sell automobiles, vans, trucks and SUVs from a single maker. Many dealerships offer the full range of vehicle sales, repairs, parts and service.

Car Sales
An auto dealership's most public face is represented by vehicle sales. A vehicle sales director or manager is responsible for hiring and managing sales associates and making sure revenue targets are met. If the dealership is large, sales directors may designate separate sales managers for commercial vehicles and cars. Sales managers oversee daily sales activity. They and sales associates demonstrate vehicles when shoppers drop into the dealership, and contact prospective buyers by telephone and email to learn more about their preferences. When shoppers are ready to purchase, sales managers work out the final price and terms with customers. They may arrange finance deals and hand off the car to the buyer after it has been inspected by the service department. At many locations, a business manager may arrange financing and leasing.

Automotive Service and Repair Technician
Employees of the service department perform repairs and routine servicing on customers' vehicles. The profitable and efficient operation of the department is the responsibility of the service manager. Larger dealerships may have a collision repair shop, and dealership management may name separate managers for accident repairs and servicing. Service managers may also negotiate repair and service contracts with fleet operators. They manage and recruit a squad of repair and service technicians. Service technicians need to fully understand diagnostic equipment as well as ever more complicated automobile technology. Technicians are not only important for repairing and servicing vehicles, but also for making sure that customers are satisfied by the service department's high-quality work.

The Parts Department
The parts department orders and maintains stocks of replacement parts to support the dealership's repair and servicing operations, as well as ordering accessories and parts for sale to customers. The parts manager hires and manages employees who take care of the parts inventory and interact with customers at the counter. A parts manager may also hire sales executives who sell parts wholesale to independent service and repair shops and to fleet operators.

Dealership Customer Service
The long-term profitability and success of car dealerships critically depends upon satisfying their customers. Service representatives greet shoppers and make arrangements with the customers who bring in their vehicles for repair or service. They make note of customers' requirements, work up estimates and provide instructions to the service department. Some dealerships also employ service advisors who meet with customers to work out the details of required service. It is their job to ensure that all issues have been properly diagnosed, and to identify other reasons that a vehicle may need repair. Customer service representatives also deal with customer complaints and follow up with customers to verify that they are satisfied with all work performed.

Dealership Management
Managers can forge career paths at car dealerships and rise up the ranks to the senior management level. The dealer principal plots dealership strategies for maximizing profits. The management team may also include a marketing director, finance director and head of operations. The team is responsible for managing dealership infrastructure and technology investments.
